What Problems Can It Detect?

What Is a CSV Cleaner?

A CSV cleaner is a utility that reads a comma-separated-values file, finds common data problems, and fixes them in a repeatable way. CSV is a simple, text-based format, but that simplicity is also why CSV files exported from different systems — spreadsheets, databases, contact forms, e-commerce platforms — often arrive with duplicate rows, empty rows or columns, inconsistent spacing, and mismatched casing. A CSV cleaner automates the tedious part of fixing those problems by hand in a spreadsheet application.

Remove Duplicate CSV Rows

Duplicate rows commonly appear when a contact list is exported more than once and merged, when a form is submitted twice, or when data is combined from multiple sources without deduplication. This tool compares every cell in a row — after trimming whitespace — against every other row in the file, and removes exact repeats while keeping the first occurrence. Because the comparison happens after trimming, rows that differ only by a stray trailing space are still correctly recognized as duplicates.

Clean CSV Columns

Beyond duplicate rows, a CSV file can carry columns that are entirely empty — sometimes left over from a template or an export that included unused fields. Removing fully empty columns reduces clutter and keeps the file focused on columns that actually carry data. This tool checks every column across all data rows and removes any column where no row has a value.

Validate CSV Data

Beyond structural cleanup, this tool includes a lightweight validation pass for one of the most common data-quality checks: email addresses. Select the column that holds email values, and the tool checks each entry against a standard email pattern, reporting how many values don't look like valid emails. Flagged rows are not removed automatically — the pattern check is a heuristic, not a guarantee of deliverability, so the decision to fix or remove flagged entries is left to you.

How the CSV Parser Actually Works

Many simple tools split CSV text on commas, which breaks immediately on any field that itself contains a comma — a common case with addresses, descriptions, or names written as "Last, First". This tool instead uses a proper character-by-character CSV parser that tracks whether it is currently inside a quoted field. Inside quotes, commas and line breaks are treated as literal characters rather than delimiters, and a doubled quote ("") inside a quoted field is correctly read as a single literal quote character. Rows are split on unquoted line breaks, handling both Unix (\n) and Windows (\r\n) line endings.

Normalizing Casing on a Column

Data entered by hand or merged from multiple sources frequently has inconsistent capitalization — "new york", "New York", and "NEW YORK" might all represent the same value. Selecting a column and choosing lowercase, UPPERCASE, or Title Case applies that casing consistently to every value in that column, which is especially useful before deduplicating on a column where case differences would otherwise cause near-identical values to be treated as distinct.

Clean CSV Files in Your Browser

Every step — parsing, analysis, cleaning, and CSV re-serialization — runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your file is never uploaded to any server, which makes this tool suitable for cleaning files that contain personal information, customer data, or other sensitive content before you process it further elsewhere.

Common CSV Cleaning Tasks

Re-serializing CSV Correctly

When the cleaned data is exported back to CSV, any value that contains a comma, a double quote, or a line break is automatically wrapped in double quotes, with internal quotes doubled, following the same quoting convention most spreadsheet applications expect. This means the downloaded file opens correctly in Excel, Google Sheets, or any standard CSV reader without manual fixing.

CSV Cleaner FAQ

Does this tool detect duplicate rows?
Yes. It compares every cell in a row, after trimming whitespace, against every other row and flags exact matches as duplicates.
Can it handle fields that contain commas?
Yes. The parser correctly handles quoted fields that contain commas, quotes, or line breaks, following standard CSV quoting rules.
Will it upload my CSV file anywhere?
No. The file is parsed and cleaned entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I undo a cleaning operation?
The cleaning options are previewed before you download, and your original uploaded file is never modified, so you can re-upload it and try different options at any time.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, this tool is completely free with no account, signup, or row limit beyond what your browser can handle.
